Harvest Food Forest: Harvesting Hope
Urban Rewild & Mubare Biodiversity Conservation (MBC) – Partnership for Change
Urban Rewild is proud to partner with Mubare Biodiversity Conservation (MBC) to deliver the Harvest Food Forest Project—a program dedicated to empowering communities through sustainable agriculture and conservation education.
Founded by Sharlene Cohen, the Harvest Food Forest Project was established to support schools with a high number of students from poaching and reformed poacher families living around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Recognizing the vital work MBC does in supporting reformed poachers and their families, Urban Rewild has partnered with them as the lead organization on the ground to manage the program in return for a management fee.
This partnership is built on a shared commitment to conservation and community empowerment. MBC plays an active role in the project, attending school programs monthly and reporting back to Urban Rewild, ensuring a continuous presence and reinforcing their connection with reformed poacher families.
The Harvest Food Forest Project focuses on:
-
Growing organic food in school gardens.
-
Teaching small business skills by selling surplus produce at local markets—an essential skill not currently taught in schools.
-
Supporting children of reformed poacher families through MBC’s school sponsorship program, with four children already sponsored through Urban Rewild’s connection.
Together, we aim to expand into under-supported schools outside Buhoma, where there is limited access to resources, minimal tourism interaction, and a high environmental impact from poaching.
By working hand-in-hand, Urban Rewild and MBC are fostering a future where
conservation and community development go hand in hand, creating sustainable solutions for both people, place and the planet.
